Review of the Dell 3115cn, 3115 Printers

Independent function is one of the ideal qualities consumers should look for in a printer. The Dell 3115cn Multifunction Color Laser Printer has this characteristic by being a stand-alone color copier. This imposing office machine is being marketed as a fast network printer. However, its 31 pages per minute for monochrome seem to me not so fast. It definitely becomes slower with color prints at 17 pages per minute.

With 2400 image quality, it has a print resolution of 600 x 600 dpi. It is also strange why Dell decided to adopt this kind of print resolution. Getting 60,000 pages of monthly duty cycle gives light to the fact that the 3115cn is a medium duty MFP. Because of this, there is more reason for users to install generic ink toner as replacement for the packed ink.

It is clear that convenient printing is the focus of this printer with the 50 pages document feeder. Users do not need to manually feed every page but just leave 50 pages of paper on the tray. On the other hand, it is not clear why the auto-duplexing was made optional. It should have been made a standard feature of the 3115cn. The two-sided printing option is also a paper-saving measure. In its absence, using generic cheap toner will provide part of the savings needed.

With all the limitations of the 3115cn, the unit can be upgraded in a number of ways. Apart from the optional auto duplexer, an extra 550-sheet input tray can be installed. There is a wireless printer adapter and the 128 MB memory can be maximized to 1152 MB for better file storage. Low and mid-volume printing is the forte of this printer and this is sustained by 4000-page color cartridge and 5000-page black toner cartridge. In addition, generic toner refill will also deliver the desired quality of prints.

If more than three dozen people are using the 3115cn, the operational cost can get high uncontrollably. Dell has introduced an ingenious method of tracking the activities of users through the Printer Web Configuration Tool. It monitors who are the users using specific cartridges in various frequencies. The Dell 3115cn has all the qualities of a cutting edge MFP. Nonetheless, as a workgroup printer, some of its features might not fit one department’s printing needs. In these scenarios, an option to add a specialized printer is needed. Generally, a whole office setup will benefit much from the features of this laser printer from Dell.
